Top 6 ways to stop smelly socks
Smelly socks aren’t great but when we have 250,000 sweat glands on our feet the odds are against us.
Our feet are meant to sweat (hence all the glands) and when sweat is first produced it doesn’t smell. It’s when it stays on the skin that the smell starts to develop.
Sweating is necessary to help us maintain our body temperature so whilst it might not always be pleasant, it’s not the sweat but the smell we want to dodge!
We’ve got 6 great ways to stop your socks (and feet) from honking out the place.
Top 6 ways to stop smelly socks
1. Wash your feet
This may seem obvious but when you’re in the shower do you give your feet the attention they deserve? They’ve carried you everywhere that day and stayed snug in a pair of shoes - it’s time for their TLC.
You can get specific antibacterial soaps that will really give your feet the gold star treatment!
2. Foot powder
Just like talcum powder, foot powder absorbs moisture which will help keep your feet dry throughout the day.
Foot powders do a fantastic job of absorbing sweat which will stop your feet smelling like anything other than roses!
Before moving to Merino socks and quality footwear, Phil used to use a good kiwi powder called ‘Grans Remedy’.
3. Antiperspirant
We use it for our underarms, why not our feet?
You don’t need to go out and invest in antiperspirants specifically for feet (unless you want to) what you use at the moment your underarms will work just fine.
Antiperspirant works by blocking your outer layer of skin’s pores which limits the amount of sweat.
4. The right socks
This is where we really know our stuff.
You don’t wear winter work socks in a heated office and you wouldn’t wear knee high socks for your trainers. You need the right socks for the job.
Beyond that you need the right fibre in your socks.
We have some anti smell options that will really tickle your fancy!
Merino wool socks
Definitely a customer favourite! Everyone should have a few pairs of merino wool socks in their sock drawer.
Merino wool takes care of your hard working feet by wicking moisture away from your skin.
This means that all through the day the quality of wool is shifting moisture away from the surface of your skin which results in no smell!
Possum socks
We love our possum fibre products because they offer such comfort to our customers.
Possum socks are a must because it’s 100% odour resistant!
This is because Possum fur takes moisture away from the body and releases it into the air keeping your feet dry without compromising on their need to sweat.
Finding the right socks for your lifestyle is important and getting it right means a quality pair of socks that fit well and keep your feet comfortable all day long.
5. The right shoes
Plastic shoes are a massive cause for smelly feet. Always opt for leather or canvas when you can so that your feet don’t suffocate throughout the day.
Make sure your shoes fit you. Wearing tight shoes can stop air circulation which encourages a moist environment that bacteria can thrive in!
Let your shoes dry out - you can pop some baking soda in them to neutralise any odours too. This will help decrease smelly socks the next time you wear the shoes too.
Always wear socks with closed toe shoes. Don’t let your feet sweat right into your shoes!
6. Let your feet breathe
Thoroughly dry your feet before putting fresh socks on and try and pad around barefoot for a bit to let them have some air.
Footcare is so important. Particularly if you have areas of hard skin as these spots can become soft when wet which is a greenhouse for germs to multiply.
Smelly socks aren’t something we want to worry about which is why we should all be:
- Taking care of our feet
- Choosing quality socks that fit
- Wearing the right shoes
