History:Â
The red poppy has a significant connection to ANZAC Day for New Zealand, just as it does for Australia. The poppy is a symbol of remembrance for soldiers who fought and died in war, particularly during World War I.
The connection between the poppy and ANZAC Day in New Zealand is largely due to the influence of the "In Flanders Fields" poem, written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915. The poem described how poppies grew amidst the graves of soldiers in the Flanders fields of Belgium, where some of the bloodiest battles of the war took place. This image of the red poppy blossoming in the midst of the devastation of war became a powerful symbol of remembrance.
In New Zealand, the RSA (Returned and Services Association) plays a key role in distributing poppies in the lead-up to ANZAC Day. The money raised from the sale of poppies supports veterans and their families, making the symbol of the poppy not just a gesture of remembrance but also a way to provide practical help to those who served. It is for this reason New Zealand Natural Clothing donates, during the month March/April $5.00 from every pair purchased to the local RSA.
